Can Warne be the trump-card for RR?

Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Daredevils

May 17, 2009

Sitting at the top of the table, Delhi Daredevils can barely afford to rest, because Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals are desperate for a win to secure a place in the semis.

Warne’s leadership has revived hopes for Rajasthan Royals (RR).Warne has inspired teammates like Munaf Patel, Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja to perform to their true potential. RR has improved their bowling (reflected in Castrol Index as Bowling Efficiency or BE) which has resulted in restricting opponents to a low score. But Warne holds the key. The table below illustrates that whenever Warne bowls well the chances of RR wining the match becomes higher. RR batting mainstay Graeme Smith and Yusuf will need support from batsmen like Naman Ojha , Swapnil Asnodkar and Jadeja to bolster theBatting Momentum (BM) for RR.

Delhi Daredevils (DD) on the other hand has consistently performed well in batting and bowling in this tournament. But complacency has no place in cricket, especially when a victory can ensure one team’s entry to semi-finals and another’s ouster from the tournament. It’s a fact that inspite of having a high BM of 182, DD struggled to a score of only 120 in their last match against the Kings XI Punjab. They depend heavily on their top four batsmen - Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan. If the top four fail, it becomes imperative that Dinesh Karthik chips in with useful knocks.  In bowling, Ashish Nehra is performing extremely well to ensure that DD maintains a high BE of 196.

Can Virender Sehwag outwit Shane Warne to get DD back to winning ways.
